Looking back at the year 2068

Written by Sudip Sharma

As we begin to look forward to celebrate 2069, we thought it would be better for us to recount on how we averaged in our previous year. Did we keep our past year's resolution, or did we let it slip? How far did our company advanced? Were we successful, or did we let the previous year pass simply by flicking the calendar? To briefly account on how Braindigit fared in the year 2068, let me sum up the major achievements of all the Braindigit subsidiaries, namely - Gobingoo, SageFrame, Cssbingo, and AspxCommerce.

One of the notable achievements of Gobingoo was the release of Listbingo 1.3.8. For all those who do not know Listbingo - Listbingo is a classified extension that helps you develop a feature-rich classified site with minimum effort and cost. Currently, Gobingoo team is busy optimizing its next and highly sought release, Listbingo 2.0. Another remarkable achievement has been the release of Listbingo Android app for smart phones. You can download your free copy of Listbingo app here. Development of IOS and Windows Mobile app for Listbingo is underway and is on its final stage.

It’s a matter of pride to announce you that after thousands of arduous hours of development, Braindigit has finally released SageFrame 2.0. SageFrame 2.0 was one of our biggest projects of the year 2068, and thankfully with its convenient features and ease of use, SageFrame has already started to throb millions of hearts. The diligence and dedication shown by our team has started to bear fruits – 1500 download as of now, within 9 days of release. Within this short stint of time, the love we received from the .NET community has also been truly remarkable. We have been featured in the Yahoo News section, and hundreds of prominent websites have appreciated and featured SageFrame 2.0.

Have you ever imagined a life without Google? Probably not. Google, the number one search engine, is now focusing on blending the intangible services it provides with something tangible - the Google glasses. With Google glasses the world will look little different, little complex and little googlish. It is quite possible that in our near future - wearing glasses would be cool. All the nerds out there, you need to find another way to project your image.

So what exactly are these Glasses? Physically, the Google glasses come with a camera, a microphone and a semi - transparent video screen. It utilizes these hardware to perform various functions like video chats, map directions, picture/video recording, recording notes, displaying weather information etc. All of these are made possible through voice commands. The picture of Google Glasses that Google released recently shows only one lens. Google Glasses is being developed in Google X lab, which is secretly run by Google. Wiki mentions that Google X lab is “thought to have been located somewhere in the Bay Area of Northern California.”

You might be wondering about when will it be available to the public or what will it cost? For that you need to wait a little longer, as Google has not yet revealed those details. CNN, on the other hand, mentions that the proto type of Google Glasses has been taken outside the Google labs for testing purpose. Another piece of vital information that has not yet been public is whether these glasses will be stand alone pieces or will they be wirelessly powered by Smartphones.

The concept is fascinating, and moreover with Google venturing into this idea, the quality is self assured. However, critics won’t hold out to express their dissent on some of its downside. Just what do you think will happen when a person puts on his glasses early in the morning, commutes to workplace and returns - all the while busy with his glasses? Will it have a detrimental effect to his eyes and brain, and furthermore to the society as one becomes constantly hooked with the information rendered by these glasses? Additionally, convenience is still a matter to consider. Will a person let go off his trendy sun glasses and depend on these glasses instead of their smart phones? The answer is imminent, and Google, like we know, must have certainly addressed these issues. Or should I say downsides? If you ask me, I’m desperately waiting to get hold of these Google Glasses.

New features in the new iPad

Written by Jyoti Chhetri

First everyone thought it would be iPad 3 - assuming that the device name will fall in line with its usual numbering sequence. Then, followed an iPad HD - when rumors went round that it will have a super-sharp retina screen similar to the one in the iPhone 4S. On March 7th, Apple announced it as just a new iPad.

One of the cool features of the new iPad is the display – even though the display is still 9.7 inches, the resolution is staggeringly high. The retina display of the new iPad is sure to mesmerize you with its 2048*1536 resolution, one million pixels more than a HDTV, and four times more than the iPad 2. Now that’s fascinating. Everything the eyes meet are crisp and exquisite. One of the biggest complains about iPad 2 was its poor camera, but that has been superseded by the new 5 mega pixel iSight camera. The iSight camera carries same optics center as in iPhone 4S.

Some other major hardware changes in this upcoming state-of-the-art product are:

  1. A high speed processor and enhanced graphics. Apple has put in a faster processor A5X Chip with Quad-core graphics to support its new display and camera.
  2. The device now has doubled Wi-Fi hotspot that has incredible ability to connect up to 5 devices at once.
  3. Another mouth watering fast thing in iPad is the 4G Lite function. 4G Lite will come in Verizon, TELUS AT&T, Rogers, and Bell providing an on-the-go internet browsing but also means an extra draining of battery.

Holi - The Season of Colors

Written by Sujana Manandhar

Prior Holi (6th March, 2012)

There was pre-Holi bash at BrainDigit, a day prior to the festival itself. It was really fun. Music, food and dance were all there to keep us entertained throughout the day.

The program started with some funny games and chocolates were awarded to the game winners. Then the music followed.. The BrainDigitians showcased their musical talent with enthusiasm and non-performers enjoyed it with much awe.  Some employees presented their belly tickling jokes while others presented funny ‘Muktaks’. Then I realized that BrainDigit has also got “AshuKavis”. Cheers to this!

The type of music that was being played in the background titillated us to dance. Well, there was no reason to stop either and soon most of us were all on the dance floor. As our DGM, Gaurav Basnet, announced-“Please be informal, as it’s a party”, the formality part of the social side was almost forgotten on the dance floor and almost everybody had only one thing in their mind “Work hard, party harder”. Yes, that’s the true BrainDigit spirit!

Hours later, hunger crept in and we headed towards the kitchen. The food was simply delicious. Once, our appetite was satisfied, the dance party resumed!

A brief history on Holi

Hindu Mythology states, Holi is celebrated to mark the triumph of good over evil. According to the Myth, Holika (a demon) dived into the fire with Pralhad (a devotee of lord Vishnu) to kill him as Holika was blessed with a boon that she would not be consumed by fire. However the fire consumed Holika leaving Pralhad safe.

Hindu community celebrates Holi to commemorate this very day. This festival of color, also known as Fagu, is observed every year on a full moon’s day of eleventh month of the lunar calendar. In our country, people (especially young ones) are following bad practices like flinging water-filled balloons mostly at women and consuming intoxicants. Thus Holi mainly ends up tragically, with numerous complaints and accidents overshadowing the fun part.

Holi (7th March, 2012)

This year I was so occupied with my own things that I was not even aware when Holi was around the corner. However some days before Holi, I noticed a boy carrying a plastic filled with water and was wondering why. Then, I realized that it was Falgun already and the Holi was near. Nevertheless, I became aware of Holi just-in-time.

I observed that Kathmandu Municipal Police was more active this Holi season. There was not much to retaliate to Holi pranksters. However unlike the past years, Police had placed strict restriction against those who harass women by hurling water filled balloons to them without their consent. This proved to be a good slap to those who had been following the hooligan practices in and before every passing Holi. Traffic police was also active, or should I say, over-active (as they usually are) during the Holi time. Several check points were deployed in most of the places around the valley.

Hope in the midst of security measures, you had a safe and fun filled Holi!

Billy Crystal hosted this "Hollywood Festival" superbly . Let me get into the details.

Recent Change on Facebook – Facebook Timeline

Written by Sujana Manandhar

Get excited with your new Facebook layout - The Timeline. Facebook Timeline is a new feature, or say, a new skin that displays a user’s profile as a digital scrapbook. Through this feature, you can view your past activities chronologically. It adds extra style and smoothness to your profile. [The timeline that Mark Zuckerberg first showed off in September was updated worldwide, at the end of December]

Get a Timeline:

There are three ways to get Timeline into your profile. You can get it either by visiting the Facebook Timeline page, or wait for Facebook to notify you about the availability; and activate it by yourself. And lastly, for those who have not updated this feature, their profile will automatically get updated to Timeline after a certain limit. In each case, you can work on your profile history before your new profile gets live.

According to my colleague Sandip – there were at least two “awesome” parties in the last month (sorry mates I wasn’t here) and we did celebrate with our Employee of the month, Santosh Dhakal, our brilliant, hardworking and social Android programmer. If you think that these events are not possible in a company, then you have not experienced Braindigit yet. After all, Braindigit is not just another average IT company.

Interaction Design for Humans

Written by Amit Gurung

We, humans, are always surrounded with a lot of information and have a huge pressure on our mind to analyze them in order to make a successful choice. There are so many data we have to deal in our daily life. The data are always important, but they may differ according to place and time. We all have to interact with these data but every individual gets it in his/her perspective and understands these data in his/her own way and uses it to decide what the particular data means; This is the crucial part for any information architect to design and present any information. The same content may provide different meanings to different people from different cultures, places and with different languages.

Umbrella

Written by Sudip Sharma

Last night when I was on my way back home from work, it was still drizzling. The road was quite wet and the pot holes were full of water. Most of the travelers had an umbrella on their hand and the ends of their pants were folded in order to save them from getting wet. I had no umbrella and had to shrug off the rain. I was little wet by the time I reached the New plaza, my nearest bus stop, and had to push myself into the bus.

The bus was as full as it could be, or may be a bit more than full. It was crammed with so many people that you could hardly have any space to put both of your feet on the floor of the bus. The driver was shouting to the conductor that if anyone fell from the bus, he would take no responsibility. The conductor assured the driver that everything was fine and added some more passengers along the way. It was still raining when the bus stopped at Koteshwor and I got off the bus.
